Are you nervous, anxious, or fearful about trips to the dentist? You’re not alone. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) up to 40 million Americans avoid dental visits because of fear or anxiety. Fearful patients who don’t receive preventive dental treatments end up spending more time and finances in the long run for extensive reconstructive work. Unhealthy teeth and gums can also lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease or stroke. Dr. Curtis is sensitive to anxious patients, and he offers several options to alleviate stress so that fearful patients can get the care they need.

What is dental anxiety?

Dental anxiety, also referred to as dental phobia, often results from a traumatic or difficult dental experience. Patients may also develop dental anxiety from witnessing or hearing about someone else’s negative experience. Dental anxiety ranges in severity. Extremely phobic patients avoid the dentist until a dental emergency arises, which may only reinforce their fear. It is estimated that 75% of the US adult population experiences some level of dental anxiety.

How does Dr. Curtis treat phobic patients?

If you’re nervous about seeing the dentist, talk to Dr. Curtis openly about your fear. New studies show that a good doctor-patient relationship is the most important factor in overcoming dental anxiety. Dr. Curtis will thoroughly explain your dental procedure, as he does with all of his patients, so you will never be confused or surprised during your visits. In addition, our dental office provides a soothing, friendly environment where you can relax. We frequently use oral conscious sedation to alleviate dental fear.

How does oral conscious sedation work?

Prior to your dental treatment, you will take a pill that Dr. Curtis prescribes. The dosage will be determined by your level of fear, age, and weight. Dr. Curtis will carefully monitor your anxiety level throughout treatment. Before your treatment begins, you will experience deep relaxation; many patients doze off during their procedures. You will remain conscious so that you can respond to Dr. Curtis’ questions. After your procedure, you will have little memory of your visit, and if necessary, Dr. Curtis will prescribe additional pain-control medication. If you choose oral conscious sedation, you must have a friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment.

Prior to your dental treatment, you will take an effective sedative pill that allows you to experience deep relaxation. Many patients doze off during their dental procedures. When necessary, Dr. Curtis can augment your sedation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas). After your care, you will have little memory of your visit. If you choose oral conscious sedation, you must have a friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment.
